What is an IP camera?

IP cameras are network cameras. They are used primarily to send video & audio over an IP network such as a local area network (Lan) or over the Internet. IP cameras enable live viewing and/or recording either continuously, at scheduled time, on request or when triggered by an event. Video can be saved locally and/or at a remote location. Authorized access to view the video is available with access to the IP network.

EZCA-451V HD IP CameraAn IP camera (or network camera) can be described as a camera and computer combined in one unit. The main components of an IP/network camera include a lens, an image sensor, one or several processors, and memory. The processors are used for image processing, compression, video analysis and networking functionalities. The memory is mainly for storing the camera’s firmware (computer program) but also stores video.

Like a computer, an IP/network camera has its own IP address, is connected directly to a wired or wireless network and can be placed wherever there is a network connection. In addition to capturing video, some IP/network cameras can provide intelligent video functions such as video motion detection, audio detection, active tampering alarm and autotracking.

IP/network cameras with day/night functionality have an automatically removable infrared-cut filter. The filter is on during the daytime, enabling the camera to produce color images as the human eye sees them. At night in low-light conditions, the filter is removed to enable the camera to take advantage of near infrared light and produce good quality black and white images. In complete darkness models are available with built-in IR LEDs to enhance the camera’s ability to use near infrared light to produce quality black-and-white images.

IP/network cameras are available in many different models to provide the solution to various surveillance and security requirements.

Fixed IP/Network Cameras

This type of camera has a fixed viewing direction and coverage area once it is mounted. Available in dome, bullet, and box camera styles.

PTZ IP/Network Cameras

Cameras with the ability to cover large areas through the use of digital pan/tilt/zoom capability with preset locations. Most types are available in several styles to accommodate any needs. Many types are available in both indoor and outdoor models, and various models are available with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR).

Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)

Certain Models of IP/network are available with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) to be used for surveillance with both dark and very bright areas such as an entrance door where bright light is present when the door is opened. A camera without WDR most likely will not provide a good image with this sudden light change. WDR Cameras often incorporate an image sensor that takes different exposures of a scene; an example is a short exposure for very bright areas and a long exposure for dark areas being combined into one image enabling objects in both the dark and bright areas of the scene to be visible on one quality image.

Most security cameras that were built for the outdoors can be used indoors as well. But the reverse is absolutely not true. Outdoor cameras are a very different breed, and they’ve been built with features and considerations that indoor cameras just don’t have. This is a guide to help you choose the right outdoor security tool for your needs. The following are the three major questions you need to ask of any camera that you’re considering for your outdoor security needs.

Is it weatherproof?

Unless you’ll be using it in a very peculiar outdoor place where it never rains or snows and the wind is calm and gentle, weatherproofing is essential for every outdoor camera. Weatherproofing should include protection from water, wind, storms, you name it. Anything that mother nature can throw at a security camera she very likely will, and you need to be prepared. Only buy weatherproofed security cameras, and make sure that you install them properly and very securely.

Does it have night vision?

Not all outdoor surveillance camera installations are meant to work primarily during the night, but all of them would benefit from night vision capability. Most crime occurs after night falls, and a good, sharp night vision camera is often your best defense against this kind of transgression. Night vision is not one size fits all. There are different levels of night vision excellence, and different capabilities. One of most powerful night vision cameras, the Prowler, can see with perfect clarity up to 120 feet away in the blackest night. Others can only see as far as 45 feet (no that that’s anything to sneeze at). Other cameras are not truly night vision at all, but “low-light” cameras meant for places that are dim, but not completely dark. Be careful when you’re choosing your outdoor camera with night vision - think about your priorities (like distance) and then make an informed decision.

Is it vandal proof?

Vandal proofing isn’t only important for outdoor security systems, but is certainly more important for them than indoor models. Because outdoor cameras are so exposed they come under much more fire from vandals. Often the vandalism is completely random, other times it’s more serious and focused. Either way, it’s important to buy cameras that come with vandal proof shells and casings so that you can continue to get the shot you need even in the face of willful interference. Vandal proofing is never a bad idea for any camera you buy, but for an outdoor camera it is often essential. An outdoor camera with all of the above is going to be powerful and secure. And those are the two most valued adjectives for any security camera on the market.

Outdoor Surveillance Cameras Provide the First Defense Against Crime

Having good outdoor security is an important first defense in stopping a thief from robbing your home or business. Because the cameras are visible to the perpetrator and are equipped with night vision capability, they are often able to deter crimes just as often as they solve them.

Major benefits to IP/network cameras include:

  • Absolute best image quality possible with higher resolution than possible with most analog cameras
  • Multiple authorized parties can simultaneously view real-time footage anytime, anywhere from the same camera through their web browser.
  • Network access allows for deployment of wireless cameras, eliminating the cost of expensive land lines as well as allowing cameras to be installed anywhere there is a network connection.
  • Maintenance of digital (IP) surveillance systems can be more cost effective than analog systems.
  • Wide range of cameras are available today to meet a variety of needs in terms of use, light sensitivity, resolution and environmental considerations.
